Of the 46 women who have served as America’s First Lady, nine, or almost 20 percent, were born in New York State. On Tuesday, May 19th at 7:30 PM, historian Elizabeth Kahn Kaplan will introduce the audience to these nine very different women, each one about whom a fascinating tale can be told. Four recent First Ladies from New York State are familiar to most of us; others, less well known, have stories that deserve to be heard. One was the daughter of a New York City Loyalist who had avoided taking part in the American Revolution. Nonetheless, his daughter married a Founding Father. Before her husband became President, she played a dramatic part in saving the wife of the Marquis de Lafayette from the guillotine.
